Time for something (a little) different
Welcome to Issue #27 of The Backbone, the fortnightly newsletter from Bionic, the business comparison experts.
This isnât your normal business newsletter though. This is designed specifically with busy small business owners in mind.
We focus less on financial forecasts and more on simple actionable tips.
We steer away from the harder-hitting news stories to look at other informative stuff you might find useful.
We share things we hope will keep you entertained on those rare occasions when you have a spare few minutes.
Our first issue launched during the February lockdown of last year and weâve gone through some changes since then. Weâre going to be trying a few different things over the next few issues, so please do let us know what you like and if you think we should be doing anything differently.
Now letâs get stuck into Issue #27âŚ

#BionicBusinessStory - 5 businesses, 1 question đ¤
There are no set rules when it comes to running a business. Thatâs why itâs important to draw upon the experience of other business owners, whether youâre just starting out or youâre an established operation. We asked five business owners for some sage advice when starting out. Hereâs what they had to sayâŚ
Bionic: Whatâs your best advice for someone just starting out?
đ˝ âDo your research and be realistic. Be prepared to work at a loss at the beginning and always try to have a good outlook and stay positive.â Lorraine Brown - J'Nik's
đ° âDon't find excuses to hold off until something pops up. Take it one step at a time and utilise social media. Most importantly, enjoy what you're doing!â Heidi Kay - Handmade by Heidi
đ§ââď¸ âKeep motivated as a team. We do group warm-ups and hold competitions for the best actor of the year, weâve all become one scary little family.â Bex Williams - AtmosFEAR
đ´ âI think sometimes you just have to do something, if you think about it too much then youâll never try it.â Melanie Martin - The Hinny Bakebox
đ âJust to go for it. If you're always thinking about doing something then you should give it a go, but you have to commit 100% and put all your time and energy into it.â Jamie Stenning - Jamie Stenning Barbers

What is a small business, anyway?
Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) make up 99% of businesses in the UK, but not all small businesses are classed SMEs - and the classification of your business can have an impact on how you run it.Â
If, for instance, you fall into the âmicrobusinessâ category, then youâll find switching energy supplier is slightly easier than it is for other types of business.
There are a number of factors that determine whether or not your business is classed as a SME.
How to register a business
If youâre looking to start a business, do you know whether you need to register it before you can start trading? Or if youâve already started up your own business without registering it, is this something you should be considering?
In any case, youâll need to know exactly who you need to register your business with as well as any rules or guidance that youâll have to follow.  With the help of our handy guide, weâll answer all the above and guide you through the process of registering your business.
Why canât pop escape the Eighties?
The pop records made between 1980, the birth of synth-pop, and 1987, when hip hop and house began to reconfigure the sound of the Top 40, have a lasting glow. But are we doomed to be stuck in the 80s forever?
